EMV chip card

EMV chip cards are now being issued at Spirit of Alaska Federal Credit Union.

Beginning the week of October 17th, 2016, any member requesting a new debit or credit card will receive one with an EMV chip.

Beginning in November, as member cards expire, debit and credit cards that are reissued will also have EMV chips. Unless lost, stolen or requested your new EMV card will have the same card number sequence as your existing card.

Cards without an EMV chip will still function in the meantime.

We're excited to offer this enhanced security protection to our members!

Debit or credit cards with an EMV chip use state-of-the-art technology to keep your transactions more secure -- so you can enjoy more peace of mind with every purchase.

When you make a transaction using the EMV chip on your card, a unique code is generated for that purchase. The chip does not reveal any of your sensitive information, but instead generates a code for the transaction that cannot be re-used. This adds an additional layer of protection that make it significantly more difficult for criminals to attempt any fraudulent activity using your card.

These cards are already in use in many other countries to help combat the rising threat of fraud. This technology has since been adopted by the major credit card issuers, including Visa® and MasterCard®.

How to use your EMV chip card:

Making a purchase using the added security of your EMV chip is simple:

  • Ensure that you're at a chip-enabled terminal when making a purchase. Many merchants now have chip-enabled terminals, and more will continue to offer them into the future.
  • Insert the chip end of the card into the terminal, facing up.
  • Sign your name or enter your PIN as you would with any other debit or credit card purchase.

…and you're done! Be sure to remove your card when the transaction is complete.

You can still use your debit or credit card by swiping it.

Some merchants do not yet offer chip-enabled terminals, so you can still use your debit or credit card the way you always have, using the magnetic strip.

Be aware, however, that you won't enjoy the enhanced security features of the EMV chip card by swiping it and using the magnetic strip. It's always more secure to use your EMV chip to make purchases.
