Credit Card Fraud Prevention Tips

No matter where you look, fraud involving credit and debit cards is making news and it is more important than ever to protect your plastic cards and your identity. Spirit of Alaska FCU wants you to know that although this can be a serious problem, there are ways to protect yourself. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Report lost or stolen cards immediately. Sign your card as soon as you receive it.
  • Avoid carrying all your plastic cards, Social Security number, birth certificate or passport. Carry only those cards you will be using and other necessary identification.
  • Reduce the number of active cards you have. Close all unused cards and cut unwanted cards into several pieces before disposing of them.
  • Memorize your PIN (personal identification number) Do not write your password or PIN on your card or carry it or your social security number in your wallet or purse.
  • Keep records of all card account numbers, expiration dates, etc. in a secure location.
  • Never give your account number or CVV number (the last three digits on the back of your card) over the phone unless you initiate the call.
  • Treat your cards as you would cash. Do not leave them unattended. Do not allow your card out of sight during a sales transaction.
  • Do not have your Social Security number or driver's license number printed on your checks or give your card, card number, social security number or PIN to anyone.
  • Transactions over the Internet should be handled carefully. Make sure you are shopping in a "secure" environment on a website.
  • Most of all be careful and use common sense when using your plastic cards! Contact us at (907) 459-5978 if you have any questions or suspect you are a victim of credit card fraud or identity theft.
  • You can get the same online purchasing protection for your MasterCard. Simply click here to learn more about the MasterCard SecureCode Program and to enroll.

Verified by VISA is designed to protect online shoppers, as well as reduce identity theft for all cardholders by allowing cardholders to add a personal password to their existing card. When making a purchase with a participating online merchant, the cardholder will validate their identity by entering a password in a special Verified by VISA window. Look for the symbol (at right) that identifies participating online merchants. In stores that are not yet participating in Verified by VISA your VISA card will continue to work as usual. Go to www.visa.com/verified for a list of participating merchants and to activate your VISA card. You will be guided through steps to create your personal password. To further help protect members from online fraud, Spirit of Alaska FCU requires card holders to participate if the merchant is a participant in Verified by VISA.
