Guides to Independence

You need to learn sound money management skills. Teens and young adults will learn how to succeed financially with Guides to Independence, a series of interactive online courses available FREE on our Web site. Courses cover topics from managing a checking account to applying for a loan. Click here to learn more.

Money rule: Money doubles by the "Rule of 72"—To determine how long it will take your money to double, divide the interest rate into 72. For example, an account earning 6% interest will double in twelve years (72 divided by 6 equals 12). Click here for more helpful money rules.

Our School Business Partnerships encourage cooperative relationships that mutually benefit our partner schools and the credit union membership. These dynamic relationship ignite creativity and imagination leading to such things as helping Hunter Elementary students students learn the value of saving and spending by learning to manage a checking account, while Spirit of Alaska members enjoy wonderful musical programs and occasional art displays in the Gillam Branch lobby. Lathrop students learn important employment skills through the Careers in Finance class and students serve the financial needs of all Lathrop students, faculty and staff members by participating in their student-operated SoAFCU Malemute Branch. West Valley High School Co-op students participate in regular workshops to develop responsible money management skills while members enjoy fantastic art displays by talented students in the Geist Branch lobby. SoAFCU is committed to the concept of business and schools working together. Many Spirit of Alaska employees participate and contribute time and resources for ongoing activities.
